Rocky Rigby and the Rite of Passage

The old man
walked six miles to school every day.
Uphill.
Both ways.
In three feet of snow.
During the hottest part of summer.
Ate dirt
and was grateful for it.
History got worse
every time he thought about it.

I have $2.32 in checking. Nothing in savings.
My next paycheck is two weeks away, and
it won’t cover the bills that are already
two weeks overdue.
I don’t know where
my next meal is coming from.

  1. Two people this morning on the same topic. Actually, I have more than $2 in the bank. However, that’s pretty much a dead-on description of one Friday evening back in 1985.
