WASHINGTON — Democratic Senate nominee Ned Lamont, the anti-war candidate who toppled Sen. Joe Lieberman in the Connecticut primary, says he was surprised by Lieberman and Vice President Dick Cheney’s claims that his Iraq views could embolden terrorists. (Story.)

Ummm, Ned, is this your first visit to America?

  1. I know it’s a throw-away line, and I know that you are one of the best writers on LJ.
I think the point is WHY has America become this way? Why is it ok from the VPotUS to call a candidate (or writer, or protester, or anyone not towing the party line)a terrorist? How did we get here and how to do we make it stop.
This IS America. This sort of thing SHOULDN’T happen here.
The party of morals and personal responsibility, my ass.

  2. 1: You’re way too kind.
2: Yeah, they’re appalling. No, it shouldn’t happen here. But it does. And as bad this crop is, it ain’t the first time the Republic has fallen into the hands of scoundrels. (I mean worse scoundrels than usual.)
I keep thinking that we’re becoming precisely what we’re designed to be, though. If you look at how the culture and government are constructed, I think it’s hard to see us arriving anywhere other than where we are.
That ain’t good news, but I fear that it’s reality.
