Just in time for election season – fantasy masquerading as fact

Joe Gandelman has a must-read this morning over at The Moderate Voice on ABC’s upcoming Wide Right wet fantasy “docudrama,” “The Path To 911.”

I certainly hope he’s right about the potential damage this could do to Disney and ABC (All ‘Bout Christ). As much as I have complained about Katie Couric and the lowering of standards at CBS, the truth is that some days ABC acts like it’s on Pat Robertson’s payroll.

Sadly, there should be no surprise in any of this, except perhaps in Disney’s sheer brazenness. This is a corp that has been the absolute centerpiece of American cultural conservatism for a very long time, and it has done more to promote and normalize a Right agenda through the years than FOX News has even dreamed of.

This part was appalling, though:

Even worse: ABC was planning to send study guides on this film and work with Scholastic publications so that school kids would be encouraged to see the film, think about it, and discuss it….just as if IT WAS FACT and NOT a docudrama that took dramatic liberties in portray key figures in ways aimed (like in all drama) to arouse viewer emotions.

Wasn’t there a word once widely used for taking license with facts, putting events through a biased political prism, then using it to teach young kids that this version was reality? The word — if you applied it to something happening in a Communist country or Iran — would be “propaganda.”

It’s almost like they’re lifting a page from the Saudi playbook, huh?

  1. My memory has faded a bit here, but a few years ago yet another movie was made about historical events around a massacre in Northern Ireland. Common historical understanding has it that, mostly, it was an accident. The movie showed British troops herding thousands of wide-eyed innocents into a stadium and then butchering the lot of them. While the British certainly haven’t been innocent in the “troubles” they have never stooped to anything like this.
The director, asked about the poetic licence, declared that it made for a more interesting story. Who said, “Don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story.”

  2. disney conservative?

Is this the same Disney that the conservatives boycott because of their position on gays?

Cultural conservatism is about a lot bigger picture than the Wide Right and gay benefits. Disney is a large public corporation doing business in the entertainment industry and that means there are certain profound realities when it comes to recruiting talent.
What I’m referring to is the macrocultural mission of depicting, promoting, and normalizing a certain view of reality. The American Way. Traditional American Values. The Traditional Nuclear Family. When you think about how society is supposed to look, what normal is, etc., there has literally been no organization in the last 50 years that has done more to establish this normative vision than Disney.
And that vision is not one that privileges the alleged “Liberal Agenda.”
